February Will Be No Easy Month

As Promised... “Cerebral Stew”
"Cerebral Stew" is the name a group of associates I know came up with when they saw I partially worked on canvas.
Yes, I'm now in full swing with, remember, the "big one:" 4ft x 6ft? This linen canvas has proven surprisingly difficult to paint on and I'm not sure if I like the "do-it-yourself" treatment of the gesso surface I did; I’m serious! In some areas, the gesso is too thick and is now “cracking”. The cracks seem to “go away” once the oils fill the “gaps”. But will they come back? I’ve chosen to ignore them since there’s no time to do a major repair on this canvas now, my exhibition is right around the corner (April 2013) and I still have so much more to do.

Applications Away!
I did manage to mail my application to Bakerhouse Art Complex, Miami (BAC). But I did have to resubmit it because I failed to provide the adequate separate files they required. I just sent them a PDF file with links to certain pages on my website that covered the requirements; also they wanted a DVD of my samples as well. I did manage to get enough time to do a PowerPoint presentation but that was only because I had to in order to meet their February 1st deadline.

The presentation was simple and it cataloged twelve paintings I liked that I did the past two years. Which brings to mind a very important point: my history as a painter and/or exhibitions is very short, and so, I may not have enough experience to get in. My work will be juried by some very knowledgeable/talented individuals. I feel that the Miami Venue will prove rewarding for me both in learning and experience.

One more thing on this subject, I did email them a picture (from my cell camera, no less) of my partial done Cerebral Stew; an afterthought, that may not have been a good idea? But I feel that this work that I’m doing on this piece is very special. Not only because of the new techniques I've had to learn to make the subjects flow on a larger composition, but I'm defining a new direction for my work and I feel that I’m growing as an artist. Wish me luck.

I Promise to be Short, Hang On…
I’m running out of paint! Yep. The large surface is eating up more paint, oils, paper towels and brush cleaner. I don’t buy in large quantities but I may have to do just that, possibly do some research on the Internet. Locate a web store with better prices than the brick and mortar. The out of pocket cost for this painting is pushing my home budget to the edge. OK, that’s enough of the whining for now ... come back and I'll tell how I did on my application!

“c u on the flip-flop!!”
